Since then security at Sydney Airport took my knitting needles (yes, I will get over it eventually), I spent three weeks in Malaysia trying to find new needles. Knitting does not seem to be a big thing either in Australia or Malaysia. Can of course be due to the heat ... Anyway, I stumbled upon a knitting store in a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur. Looked really nice, a couple of ladies sitting there, knitting and smiling. But there were only allergenic nylon yarns and no interesting patterns. Then I saw these crochet needles in a Japanese shop:
Och jag kan inte hjälpa att jag tycker det är jättekul att det står "knitting needles" när det är virknålar. Visade detta hysteriskt lustiga för ett par vänner, varav en iallafall är inbiten stickare, men de bara stirrade på mej. Jag började då undra om jag hade tappat verklighetsförankringen totalt, det har ju hänt förut, och blivit en fullständig sticknörd? Osökt kom tankarna in på filmen "Plötsligt i Vinslöv".
And I can not help but think it is hilarious it says "knitting needles" on the outside when it is crochet needles. Showed this hysterically funny observation to a couple of friends, including one who really is into knitting, but they just stared at me. I began to wonder if I'd lost all sense of realism, this has happened before, and finally become a full knitting nerd? My thoughts automatically went to the movie "Suddenly in Vinslöv". What kind of movie would it turn out to be about me if one made a movie out of the most intense moments of knitting?
On the needles are a candle flame shawl in Kid Silk and one like this in one of Drops grey alapackas, knitted on circular needles:

"Carry-on baggage rules will be relaxed under a shake-up of aviation security announced by the Federal Government today. The changes will see passengers again allowed to carry some sharp implements, such as nail files and clippers, umbrellas, crochet and knitting needles on board aircraft from July next year.Metal cutlery will return to return to cabin meals and airport restaurants following Government recognition that security arrangements must be targeted at 'real risks'."
Home again. Both nice and a bit boring. It's more fun with 30 degrees and the sun, than 0 degrees and mud mud mud. Quite honestly. But the monkeys began to finally long for GameBoys and friends. And I began to miss to my knitting. The three shawl projects I had brought on the trip, of these became nada due to overzealous officials at the security check at Sydney airport. It is quite unbelievable, I thought I was on Candid Camera or something, but they actually took my two circular needles, 6 and 7 mm at the security checkpoint. I had made sure before my last U.S. trip needles were ok on board, and the U.S. Aviation Safety whatever internet page says that knitting needles are ok onboard. It is also ok in Europe. So you can safely go by Qantas from Heathrow to Sydney knitting. But knitting is dangerous if you leave Sydney with Qantas to go to London. Logic, hello?? Yes, should you laugh or cry, I do not know, here I come, a Swedish mother traveling with small monkeys, and I am considered a security risk. In the security check, I suggested that they should take my pens too, that from a potential weapon perspective there is no differenc between a knitting needle and a ball-point pen. I thought it was best that they took the yarn also, I could potentially strangle the pilot. Then they became angry and said I had an attitude problem and if I did not calm down I would not be allowed on the flight. Yes, sigh. It does not feel good that the security people are spending a lot of time and energy on non-risks, ie, circular needles 6 mm. If you are like me, a bit worried about terrorist threats, it certainly does not feel nice to know that security people are interested in knitting needles, when they, from a purely statistically point of view, should check out all potential al-Qaeda guys instead. Am still angry. Thankfully, you could order new needles at Garnkorgen online, from Kuala Lumpur. So new, long circular needles were waiting for me when I got home. And today I read in the Sydney Herald Tribune, Post Chronicle Paper that even the Australian government has been doing some serious thinking, from July next year it is no longer dangerous with knitting needles onboard, how lucky!

They'll have to reconsider their decision in the event that al-Qaida takes up knitting in their Afghan caves. That would seem suspicious.
I brought a finished shawl in Kidsilk, birch-pattern, to Sydney. I knitted it during the summer holiday and it was a gift to one of the friends we stayed with in Sydney.
